Organizing Chaos: How Can I Hear From God?

Organizing Chaos: How Can I Hear From God?

A couple weeks ago many of you had the opportunity to be a part of our latest Equip training on “Organizing Chaos.” You can find the podcast, notes, and handouts from this event HERE. At this equip training we discussed how life is ridiculously busy and how we are all searching for some sort of semblance of “balance.” However, I shared that achieving balance in life is impossible. We then spent the rest of the evening discussing how to develop a “Rule of Life” to live by (For a great resource on developing your own rule of life check out Steve Macchia’s Crafting a Rule of Life). I shared Peter Scazzero’s definition of a rule of life from his book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. He defines a rule of life as “an intentional, conscious plan to keep God at the center of everything we do.” We then discussed why a rule of life has everything to do with organizing the chaos in our life. As we closed out the evening we discussed how, when we can keep God at the center of everything we do, interestingly enough, life becomes a lot more organized.

Organizing Chaos

 Organizing Chaos

If most of us were honest with our selves we would acknowledge that our lives are chaotic. We all have so many responsibilities that we find difficult to juggle. According to some stats we as citizens of the United States are stressed out, are over worked, are lacking adequate rest, think we need more time than we have, believe we can multi-task effectively, are stressing out our kids, and are not sleeping enough. These are pretty significant issues. On top of that we are also trying to be faithful and committed followers of Christ.

A Place for Pain

A Place for Pain

Kim Walker-Smith’s song, “Still Believe,” is an incredible song of believing in the name and power of Jesus in any and every circumstance. At the end of the song, she sings the line, “Pain has no place…In your presence, God, we find all we need.” Though it is true that Jesus is everything we could ever need in this lifetime, I am not so sure that pain isn’t welcome in the presence of Jesus. I understand that she meant that Jesus heals our pain, but it is almost implied that when we enter into His presence, our pain is taken away. I just don’t see how this is always true.

Watching, Reading, and Listening to this Blog Will Improve Your Marriage

Being married to my high school sweetheart, Sarah, has been one of the most amazing experiences in my life. She is one awesome girl. As a team, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are continually working together to become better. A large portion of the reading and studying I do throughout the year relates to books, sermons, and blogs centered around the topic of marriage. As one of the pastors of Vintage Church, I frequently find myself referencing the same principles with single men, engaged couples, and married couples. In this blog I want to share with you 2 short books, a sermon and a music video that are the source for these principles.

The Presence of Christ in the Midst of Disaster

The Presence of Christ in the Midst of Disaster

The news flashes a story about the death of innocent children or a movie theater shooting and the world suddenly begins to question God. Why is it that we only seek God when problems arise? This world seems to be falling deeper and deeper into sin. And as time goes on the world seems to be turning farther away from God. We often question why all these problems continue to arise and where God is in the midst of them. The truth of the matter isn’t that He is not there; He is in the middle of every situation. God gives each of us the choice of free will, but we are to use all the knowledge God has given us to do what is right. “We aren’t robots”, my mom says, “God gives each and every person their own free will.” Despite each of us having our own free will, God is still in control and in the midst of the disaster.
