Does the Virgin Birth Really Matter?

Does the Virgin Birth Really Matter?

This passage in Luke is one of only two places in the New Testament that mentions what we call the “virgin birth” of Jesus Christ (the other being Matthew 1:18, 22-25). The relative silence on the subject within the rest of Scripture has caused some to doubt the claim’s validity and others to simply minimize its importance. The argument usually goes something like this: “Surely the Apostle Paul would have discussed the virgin birth in one of his letters if it had any significance. Wouldn’t Jesus have mentioned his birth if it was an important part of the gospel?”

Why the “Begats” Matter: The Importance of Jesus’ Genealogies

Why the “Begats” Matter: The Importance of Jesus’ Genealogies

Throughout the Advent season leading up to Christmas, there are several passages from the Bible that are commonly read or recited. We read Scriptures on the birth of Jesus, the magi, the shepherds, and even hear about the prophecies of Jesus. Very seldom, however, do we read or hear about the genealogies of Jesus. In fact, these are passages we often skip over. If you grew up in the church or are familiar with the King James Version of the Bible, you’ve probably read these genealogies before and been completely confused, as they would go on and on about “so-and-so begat so-and-so.” Did you ever think that these genealogies were all that important?

How Do I Know I’m Saved?: Test #5

How Do I Know I’m Saved?: Test #5

If you’re like me, it is much easier to grasp tangible, practical realities than to assess subjective, internal experiences. So far, this is the journey we’ve taken through 1 John and the question, “How do I know I’m saved?” We’ve looked at our interactions with Jesus, the world, sin, and people. Yet, in this post, we’re going to move to something deeper and even more fundamental to our salvation.

How Do I Know I Am Saved?: Test #4

How Do I Know I Am Saved?: Test #4

In this post, we continue to answer the question, “How Do I Know I Am Saved?” We’ve discussed three tests thus far, looking at our relationship to Jesus Christ , the world , and sin. Today, we look at the fourth test. On Sunday, Pastor Rob kicked off our “Church of the Future” series, looking at Deuteronomy 6:1-9. Before turning to this passage, he mentioned the story of Jesus in Matthew 22:36-40. In this story, someone asks Jesus, “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus responds, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” In our first post on our relationship to Jesus Christ, we looked at the first commandment. Today, we look at the second commandment, answering our fourth test question, “What is my relationship to people?”

How Do I Know I’m Saved?: Test #3

How Do I Know I’m Saved?: Test #3

What we think we believe and what we actually value can be two, very different things. Unfortunately, this can often be people’s approach to Jesus. If you ask a random person on the street here in the city whether or not they believe in God, statistically, you are likely to hear them reply, “Yes.” Yet, for many, that is sadly as far as their spirituality goes. Can a person who truly believes in God, and even claims to know God, orient the vast majority of their lifestyle as if he doesn’t exist? More than that, can someone who is truly a Christian continue to live in a lifestyle of sin?

How Do I Know I’m Saved?: Test #2

How Do I Know I’m Saved?: Test #2

If you’ve been a part of a church family for some time, chances are you’ve heard the phrase that biblical salvation is all about “relationship.” In our first blog in this series, we looked at the primary relationship described in the New Testament: our relationship to Jesus Christ.  This is not something that we earn but rather something we enter into by repentance and faith. Because we can’t work for it, our salvation in Jesus can often feel very subjective. Do I really know him? Thankfully, the book of 1 John in the Bible presents four other “relational tests” that should be evident in the life of a follower of Jesus.

How Do I Know I’m Saved?: Test #1

Regardless of the subject, one of the most difficult questions someone can ask is, “How do you know?” This question applies to just about anything. Often times we make assertions about all sorts of things and someone will respond, “How do you know?” Some people explain, “That’s just the way it is.” For some, myself included, that is a poor response. There simply has to be an explanation. Particularly, “How do you know?” is a question I’m often asked in pastoral counseling. The other Vintage Pastors and I often meet with people who want to know the answer to one question: “How can I know that I am saved?” Without a doubt, there is no more important question.
