Lessons from the Coffee Shop: Love the City

Lessons from the Coffee Shop: Love the City

The moment someone spoke the word “city,” I immediately saw a skyline. I mean, what else would you think? A city indicated a cluster of multiple levels of buildings that housed various businesses and people. So, when I heard the phrase “love the city” from Vintage Church’s mission statement my first understanding of this was to love the actual city itself. By loving the city itself I figured it meant you worked in it, rooted for the teams, took part in festivities, and became a full on supporter of wherever you are planted. From sitting in a coffee shop, however, I have learned that is not what it means to love the city

TRAIN: The Discipline of Prayer

 TRAIN: The Discipline of Prayer

Over the last two weeks we’ve been looking at the spiritual disciplines, working to understand what it means to “train” for our spiritual lives. We now come to the spiritual discipline of prayer. Prayer is simply a conversation with God, a direct conversation with God. It is essential in any relationship to have communication between one another and prayer is how we converse with God. It truly is a gift, but a discipline at the same time. Although we are told to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17),  most Christians spend on average less than 10 minutes a day praying. As a church kid, I believed prayer was when you closed your eyes and bowed your head before a meal or when the pastor told you to do so on Sunday. Though this is a sign of respect, the Bible provides us with different ways to pray. Today we are going to look at six different examples of how people prayed in the Bible and also discuss how we can incorporate these ways into our own lives.

More than Netflix: Including Spiritual Rest in Your Sabbath

More than Netflix: Including Spiritual Rest in Your Sabbath

Have you ever tried to rest one day only to find yourself binging on Netflix and feeling just as worn out? Time and time again, I have tried to justify being a couch potato as “Sabbath rest.” In the busyness of our daily lives, pausing for physical rest is definitely important. Yet, physical rest alone is not sufficient for the holistic rest that God calls us to in him. It is equally necessary and beneficial to rest spiritually as well.

Lessons from the Coffee Shop: Live the Gospel

This summer, Vintage has the incredible opportunity to host three college-age interns from Prestonwood Baptist Church. Prestonwood is a wonderful Gospel partner with Vintage, and we are excited to train and serve alongside Caleb, Kelsey, and Morgan this summer. Over the next three weeks, each one of them will be featured on our blog, sharing from their personal experience of living the gospel, loving the city, and being the church here in New Orleans.

vKids Is Movin’ On Up!

vKids Is Movin’ On Up!

Dear vKids Parents,

Vintage Church is Movin’ On Up to two locations and four gatherings so that we can better reach our city with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is great news for vKids! We will be in a renovated environment, intentionally designed to best serve our kids with our three vKids promises in mind: truth, safety, and fun. These three objectives are the same objectives we give our vKids leaders to focus on at every vKids gathering. We want to make sure that we don’t get wrapped up in doing things that don’t really matter. We want to focus on what matters most, so we might have the most impact on our kids. So, what can you expect from vKids as we Move On Up?

Put Your Feet Up: The Importance of Physical Rest In Our Sabbath

Put Your Feet Up: The Importance of Physical Rest In Our Sabbath

Recently my wife and I celebrated “Staycation 2014.” We shipped our two young boys off to their grandparents’ house. We celebrated an anniversary, enjoyed each other’s friendship, and explored our city like tourists. But the linchpin of the weekend was rest. Our sons have been notorious for how they have pushed the limits of our depravity through sleep depravity. Beyond that, we have been in a season of life that hasn’t lent itself well to good rest between work, family, and social responsibilities. We knew for our personal and family health, we needed a time in which rest had to be a top priority. For our sanity, we needed some sleep! Therefore we made a decision. We didn’t set an alarm. Even though we had many things we wanted to do, we chose physical rest first.

We Are Family

 We Are Family

I’ve recently been reflecting on how thankful I am for the community surrounding our family. Robert and I have been so blessed to be able to sing and lead together for fifteen years now. I believe the Lord has given us this calling and gift together and I am so thankful. Even after having five kids, the Lord has continued to allow and make it possible for us to lead and serve together. Sometimes I think it would be easier to take some time, while our kids are young, and not serve in this way for a season. I have taken breaks here and there, especially right after having babies, but for the most part, we have continued steadily in this calling. Even in the breaks I knew that I would be back leading with him. It was never an option to me. I am in ministry with my husband and there is no doubt in my mind that i am doing what the Lord has called me to do.

TRAIN: An Introduction

TRAIN: An Introduction

Discipline. For most of us that is the one word we don’t like. Discipline often implies one of two things. Either it refers to being corrected for something we’ve done wrong or it refers to training or improving ourselves in some way. Both of these experiences are often painful and not fun. Most of us are adults and therefore are not being corrected for our actions on a regular basis. But the other type of discipline still is very much a part of our lives. Each of us have daily routines. We need to be disciplined to get up on time, arrive at work on time, take care of our children, pay our bills on time. The list could go on and on. These are all things that we know we have to do.
