Enjoy Jazz Music & Support a New Orleans School
/Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in August 2005. Almost a decade after this disaster, our city is transitioning into a new phase of rebuilding. The early stages included house repair and new businesses moving in or starting up. This new phase that is occurring will be one of the most important ones. Involved will be new developments and different social reforms. One of the important institutions will be the New Orleans school system, which includes various charter and public schools.
Recently I had the privilege of attending the 2014 Legislative Breakfast hosted by the Orleans Public Education Network. Some of our Louisiana State Senators and Representatives discussed various legislation that they would be working on in our capitol. As I listened to our officials, principals, and various parents share, I realized that so much progress has been made in our school system over the past five years. But there are still complexities and issues that require various city groups to see the completion of the process that was started. It takes the whole city to raise our children. The school system should be a priority for everyone in our city, from young professionals to college students and young families alike.
Langston Hughes Academy (LHA) is a thriving charter school founded in 2007, which is impacting hundreds of children in New Orleans. The school is part of the FirstLine Schools charter network. LHA’s facility is located in Mid-City near the Fairgrounds and was the first new school rebuilt post-Katrina. Over the past year Vintage has partnered with the staff and teachers as they educate and love children in our city. Read more about Langston Hughes Mission & History – HERE.
On Tuesday April 29th at 7pm, LHA will host the 4th annual Jazz Night Benefit Concert at Republic New Orleans. This annual event happens in conjunction with Jazz Fest. All proceeds will fund students’ end-of-year field trips, band instruments, and in-school music instruction. This year’s event will showcase local New Orleans talent and musicians who work with students at the school.
