Mother’s Day—A Reflection of Honor

Mom! A word that is used quite frequently…

Yesterday was a big day for Mom’s all across the board, as we recognized “Mother’s Day.” Everyone has a different story and experience when we think of the scores of Mother’s Day events and celebrations we have been a part of. To some people, Mother’s Day is a challenging day, which may bring back difficult memories and heartaches, but to others, it is a day filled with joy, smiles and laughter.  Some of us may have come from broken homes, lost a mother, or perhaps have lost a child or spouse as a mother. Others may not be showing our mothers the respect that we ought to be showing, or we could possibly be neglecting the love that comes from our mothers. Someone may also find himself or herself in a circumstance where it is challenging to love. The journey of life brings various challenges and various joys. In regards to our families, and specifically to our mothers, how can we all relate as we reflect on yesterday’s “Mother’s Day”? What is the significance of this day for us?

Biblical Significance

We see from the beginning of time that God’s original intention for people to multiply across the world would take place through male and female, mother and father. Genesis 3:20 says, “The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”  The first woman ever created by God was named Eve, which literally means, “life-giver.” There are numerous passages in Scripture that give us practical examples of how God has used mothers time and time again to demonstrate the amount of love that they were designed to give. We even see David including the blessings of a mother in the conclusion of Psalm 113, which serves as a message of praise to God: “He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!”  

Spread the Love!

Obviously, the Lord thinks highly of mother’s and it was His original intention and masterpiece. Knowing this, we as Christians should be compelled to go above and beyond for our mothers. The honest fact is, some of us may feel this statement is often easier said than done. No matter the circumstance we find ourselves in, we can be assured that the grace and love of Jesus outweighs any heartache, shattered memory or struggle some may have, and we should take action according to the Lord’s specific calling in that situation. That action may be difficult, whether it is confession, forgiveness or restoration, but Christ calls us to constantly be mending our relationships, and basing our horizontal relationships on our true vertical relationship with Him. Your obedience may compel others to action!  

If you find yourself in a great situation, with a peaceful, loving and generous mother, give God thanks and praise. Cling closely to that truth, and know that mothers are to be treasured and taken care of because they have taken care of us as children. Spread the love of Christ through this reflection of Mother’s Day, and know that it goes much deeper than just historical tradition; it honors and glorifies the Lord, Jesus Christ.
