A Balanced Diet of Discipleship

“I just want to be fed.” Chances are that if you’ve been around church life for any length of time, you have heard some variation of this criticism. Many Christians today have a strong desire (and rightfully so) to go “deeper” into God’s Word. They come to a gathering on a weekend, hear the Gospel preached, and leave feeling like the content was too “shallow” and needed more “meat.” What’s the solution? I believe the answer can be found in part by comparing the growth of our physical lives to that of our spiritual lives.

A Place for Pain

Kim Walker-Smith’s song, “Still Believe,” is an incredible song of believing in the name and power of Jesus in any and every circumstance. At the end of the song, she sings the line, “Pain has no place…In your presence, God, we find all we need.” Though it is true that Jesus is everything we could ever need in this lifetime, I am not so sure that pain isn’t welcome in the presence of Jesus. I understand that she meant that Jesus heals our pain, but it is almost implied that when we enter into His presence, our pain is taken away. I just don’t see how this is always true.

 UN1TED This Sunday

This Sunday is our August UNITED gathering at Langston Hughes Academy. During the month of July we have been collecting backpacks and school supplies for the students at Langston Hughes. Some of the families can’t afford the cost of these supplies. This Sunday we will be giving our backpacks to the school administration so if you haven’t brought a backpack please bring one this Sunday. The students’ ages range from Kindergarden – 8th grade. This is a great opportunity to love our city and BE the church.
