See Life Differently by Looking Through the Eyes of a Lion

What will you do when the unthinkable happens in your life?

Jesus encouraged listeners that “in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) Suffering isn’t really a matter of “if” but more a “when.” Each of us have unfortunately faced a devastating loss, terrible time, challenging obstacle, loss of a job, or some other painful season. In the midst of the pain there is a way to have HOPE. When we open our eyes and heart to the Lord there is incredible power available to each of us.

In Defense of Halloween

As Christians, we are known throughout America for what we are against. From exaggeration to actual, from truth to stereotype, from abortion to Disney movies, the world can often see us as a people driven by a need to boycott.

Because of this, I want to put on record why I am pro-Halloween.

To be clear, this is not to say that I am pro-all-halloween. You will never see me dressed as a scantily-clad nurse. You will never catch me flippantly or actively engaging in anything that conjures up spirits or demons. That is not something I want to mess around about. You will also never catch me eating candy corn. It’s basically wax, people.

The Corrupted & Distorted Good: The Deadly Sin of Lust

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been discussing the 7 deadly sins. Until now, many of the sins we’ve discussed like gluttony or sloth are sins that we often overlook in our life as less serious. While that is a dangerous mindset for us to have regarding sin, most of us certainly do not think that way about lust. If you’ve been a part of the church for any length of time, you’ve heard about the sin of lust. In fact, even if you haven’t been in the church, you’ve probably heard about the sin of lust. Personally, I’ve never met a man who doesn’t struggle with lust and I would be naive to believe that women also do not struggle with lust. If most humans struggle with lust, then it is probably a good idea for us to discuss this deadly sin.

It is safe to say that everyone enjoys food. We know it to be true that food is precious, and a good gift. Living in New Orleans, we experience food at its greatest potential. Nothing can exceed what our taste buds experience as we enjoy delicious New Orleans seafood and cuisine. Yet what we do not always realize is how often our pleasure of food reigns in our thoughts, actions and even our hearts. This leads us to the deadly sin of gluttony, the act of excessive eating.

It’s been three years since the Lord called us to plant the Gospel in San Antonio. We sold everything we had and packed it into a Uhaul and moved our life to San Antonio and left behind our deepest friendships and relationships at Vintage Church. Now, 1 church plant and 2 kids later, there isn’t a week that goes by that Amanda and I don’t spend time reminiscing about the time God gave us at Vintage Church. We are so thankful for what God is doing at Vintage and we are praying alongside you for MORE. As a GX partner, I am excited to update you with all the things God is doing here in San Antonio through our partnership in the Gospel!

The Subtle Slavery of Money: The Deadly Sin of Greed

Money is a reality that almost all humans must face at some point in their life. At some point in our lives, we get our first job, begin to save money, and spend that money. It becomes readily apparent that the more money you have, the more you can buy. Some of us might even experience this prior to our first job. Growing up, some of us have parents who have more resources than others. In looking at our friends’ lives, we are driven to compete and have what they have. I’m amazed at my four year old son. He has no idea what money is, but he knows that he likes toys and wants them for himself.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve looked at three of the Seven Deadly Sins, including pride, envy, and wrath. Today we’re tackling sloth. For most of us, sloth is not one of those sins we think about often. In fact, sloth might be a something we never even considered a sin. Some of us might be asking ourselves, “what does it mean to commit the sin of being a sloth?” While we might have questions and doubts about the sin of sloth, the Bible and the church throughout history have discussed this sin regularly.

Community’s Freedom: Why Vintage Church Facilitates Life Groups

Recently, I have heard countless reports of Christians who have isolated themselves from any type of Christian community. Sadly, this isolation has caused many of them to fall into deep, habitual sin. Some of these individuals have struggled so greatly, they’ve taken their own lives.

Sin’s Isolation

For many of these people, once their sin is exposed, everyone around them is completely taken back. They never imagined that person struggled with addiction, depression, or any other sin or symptom. Sadly, all of their friends though they knew them only to find out they had been deceived.
